Daniel didn’t even bother to knock. He threw the door open, stepped through, and slammed it shut.

Nessie frowned and looked up at him. “I don’t believe we had an appointment, Daniel.”

He tossed his silence cube on her desk. “I just got done talking to Tim, and he said I should talk to you, Carolyn.”

She arched a brow. Apparently, she’d gotten used to the nickname, so the use of her actual name by an agent proved a surprise.

The woman frowned and glanced down at the silence cube before reaching into a desk drawer and grabbing something. Daniel’s stomach tightened.

Be damned embarrassing if I ended up shot to death in CIA headquarters.

When she sat up, she wasn’t holding a gun but another ninja turtle.

“What’s this about, Agent Winters?” Nessie emphasized his title and name.

“Aliens among us, and not the kind with magic.” Daniel shrugged. “Tim sent me to Vancouver to recover the nozzle to some sort of weapon. When I pressed him, he spilled the beans. Then he told me you were on his team and I should talk to you.”

Nessie snorted. “I’m surprised to see you acting so stupidly about this.”

“Huh?”

“You should have waited to talk to me.” She nodded toward the silence cube and the ninja turtle. “After all, you’re being watched. Maybe Franklin hasn’t impressed upon you how dangerous this might be.”

Daniel shrugged. “Watched? By who? The Company? That comes with getting this.” He padded the ID badge on his chest.

Nessie shook her head. “Not this type of surveillance. Some of the other people involved in this…matter have suspected Franklin for a while. He’s your mentor, so they suspect you as well. They want all this information to stay buried. Some might even want it to be buried for the right reasons, but it doesn’t change the fact they’re in over their heads.” She gestured to herself, then Daniel. “That’s what we represent—a rescue effort, a way of stabilizing this situation.”

He stared at her, the woman’s frown only deepening.

The agent shrugged. “I’m not so sure I buy all this.”

She narrowed her eyes. “You think we’re making this up?”

“I don’t know what to think other than there are artifacts out there with strange symbols that could mean a lot of things.”

The woman slowly. “You successfully recovered the nozzle, then?”

If I didn’t tell Tim about the Munich gun, there’s no reason to tell her. Might as well keep this shit focused.

“Yes. Tim’s little Vancouver adventure went well enough, thanks to my quick thinking.”

A look of relief spread over her face. “Thank God. That’s not something we needed to have still floating around. You wouldn’t believe the kind of damage it could do.”

Daniel’s chuckle was dark. “You might be surprised what I’d believe.”

“Your belief doesn’t make the danger any less real. The important thing isn’t even that Franklin or I believe in it, but that there are various powerful people out there who believe in all this and are very nervous. Nerves make for dangerous mistakes.”

The agent rubbed the back of his neck.
